Mechanical problems faced by the small scale manufacturing sector

Small scale industries form the most important part of the Indian economy. Large scale industries may have been in the spotlight, but it’s the small scale ones that have a bigger chunk of the total manufacturing pie in India.
Talking about the mechanical aspect in these firms, they don’t have a merry time always. It’s not like the big-time manufacturers don’t face any problems- the problems faced by a company would likely be the same, no matter how small or big!
These problems could be harsher on small-scale manufacturers due to several reasons like budgets, less space, expertise, and low exposure! The deficit in these gives hard time to these companies.

Mechanical problems that may ensue for these firms are:

1. Budget is always the main problem for an SME. That is the reason why it’s been called a small-scale industry. Due to low budgets, the companies cannot afford contemporary automation and machinery which results in low productivity compared to others. Automates and machines form an important feature of the manufacturing sector and a prick in that can be of great loss. The machinery also requires regular maintenance, which can reflect costs in the balance sheets of the manufacturer and this makes it more exorbitant for them.

2. Small scale manufacturers, as their name suggests, inevitably do not have enormous space to carry out their operations. This may cause problems for the setup and working of the machinery. Automated machines require space to work or at least for getting installed. Small-scale manufacturers cannot set an assembly line on their premises just like their bigger counterparts. This restricts them from getting work off several machines. They have to work with old school type of machines which call for less space and money. The biggest drawback of these machinery is their low yield and less efficiency.
3. Machines and automation do not fully eradicate the use of human resources. Machines work continuously and they need to be kept in check. For this, companies require to have a professional mechanical team to look after the wear and tear of these machines. There is no guarantee that a machine would work 24×7 without a breakdown or would need no maintenance. Even an air-conditioner at your home wouldn’t guarantee that. Expertise to handle these mechanics is as important as these machines to a manufacturing firm. Small-time manufacturers get a hard time getting these professionals which can cause a rupture in the manufacturing process.
4. There also lies the problem of technology with them. Although the mechanical design is the cornerstone of industrial automation, everything today is being done on the ‘cloud’. Though automation being done on the cloud eliminates human resources in between, it is hard for these firms to adopt that. The reason cannot be fully summarized, but it has been seen in many of the small scales. Mostly it’s because they do not like to change their working style and think they wouldn’t be able to adapt to the cloud phenomenon. This even pulls them one step back in an uptight race of competition.
Having said all this, there are even small-scale industries that have tackled these obstacles and are generating profits. In the mechanical field, we can say if you stay updated, you will be marginally free from any more bumps in your way.
