One District One Product: A Game Changer in the Indian Manufacturing Industry

ODOP Utter Pradesh

The Government of India has been actively working through several schemes such as ‘Make in India’, ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, etc. to increase manufacturing in the country. This has led to gradual improvement in the manufacturing activities across the country.

Inspiring from the Uttar Pradesh government, the Government of India is planning to launch ‘One District One Product’ scheme across the country with an objective to encourage manufacturing from the district level and promote local products not just in the country but across the world. The government is working on the action plan to launch the program soon.

The Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has recently unveiled the government’s plans to improve manufacturing in the country through ‘One District One Product’ scheme. The minister has said that the central government is working with state governments on ‘One Product One District’ programme. Under this first-of-its-kind programme, each and every district in the country will be encouraged to manufacture a unique product that is native to that particular district. The government is expecting to add INR 20 lakh crore output in the manufacturing sector in India in next five years. “Ministry of Commerce & Industry is working with states on ‘One District One Product’ programme, we will soon be unveiling the programme where every district in the country will be focusing its energies on the outreach of their own products of excellence. The move will help India expand its economic activity and create jobs for its youth,” said the minister. The government has already identified the list of products suitable for ‘One District One Product’ programme.

India is a land of diversity with different cultures, traditions, food and taste habits. In India, almost every state, district and area for that matter is famous for its local products that confined to that particular region.  Therefore, considering this huge scope for diversity in the country, ‘One District One Product’ can prove to be a game changer in the country’s manufacturing sector. One Product One District is not a completely new programme; it has already been successfully implemented in Uttar Pradesh in the year 2018 by the state government. The main objective of the scheme is to encourage specialized products and crafts across 75 districts in the state of UP.

Successful Implementation in UP

Under the programme, artisans, manufacturing units and other associations related to the selected products are encouraged by providing loans, technical assistance, establishing Common Facility Centres, providing better marketing opportunities, etc. The state government has signed MoUs with e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and eBay to promote the selected products online. The government is also planning to promote the selected products through retail stores across the country.  The program helps to preserve and develop arts that are typical to a particular area and provides employment to local people within that area. It also helps to reduce regional imbalances and economic inequalities in the country. The scheme has helped the state increase exports by 30%, making UP one of the top states in terms of exports. Handicrafts, food processing, garments, carpets, etc. are some of the industries that have been largely benefited from the scheme. For instance, the export value of Bhadohi carpets has doubled becoming Rs. 8,000 crores from Rs. 4,000 crores.

The ‘One District One Product’ scheme which is expected to be launched officially soon by the Government of India will help to enhance industrial activates across the country beyond urban areas at the district and rural areas, and generate employment to the local population. Through the scheme, the central government is aiming to make each district in the country a manufacturing and export hub.
