Although wood is cultivated for the paper manufacturing process, yet half of the raw material is obtained through wood chips from the saw-mill industry, recycled paper, vegetable matter and residues of cloth. Bamboo was initially known as the raw material to manufacture paper. However, with the advancement in the paper manufacturing process, almost all trees can be used to manufacture paper. Apart from trees, some plants like sugarcane, jute and hemp can also be used to manufacture paper. Cotton and Linen rags from the textile industries are used to make fine grade paper. Below are the steps that are involved in paper manufacturing.
The paper pulp is further washed to remove the chemicals and dried to obtain fresh fibers. The paper pulp is bleached to prevent the paper from becoming yellow through the age. Many paper making process makes use of chlorine free bleach as it is eco-friendly. These processes allow in transformation of yellow pulp into white dried fiber which is the main ingredient for making paper. These fibers are also shipped to other paper mills who carry out further processing of paper making.
The fiber is shipped after drying which enables easy transportation. However, the paper mills mix the fibers with water to refine it into paste. This is obtained from a series of rotating and stationary blades. These paper manufacturing machines allow the fibers to have clean cut ends which enhances the quality of paper as they bind more tightly which strengthens the paper. Hence, this becomes an important paper manufacturing process for enhanced quality papers. Although the refined paper pulp is enough to make paper, it is still mixed with calcium and clay as it increases the density of the paper and makes the paper opaque. Dyes may also be used along with paper pulp to enhance the appearance of paper.
The refined pulp is fed into an enormous paper machine which drains out the excess water. Water is used in abundance for making paper. To manufacture 1kg paper 100 liter of water is required. However, as it contains a minimal amount of chemicals, 90% of the water can be recycled to be used again. The machine through a series of rotating processes, removes the excess water, presses the paper to form large rolls of paper. The next section of the paper making machine would be drying cylinders, which dries out the sheets of paper forming freshly pressed, dried paper reels.
Although the raw materials and other ingredients in production are minimal, easily acquirable and economical, the paper manufacturing machines require higher investments. Almost all the paper making process i.e. Pulp to Paper process is performed by the machines. For dying, quality testing and to check consistency of production human interference is much necessary. The papers are further used for making several products that are used largely in daily lives. Some of the products to name are
One of the widely used paper commodities including domestic as well as for commercial purpose. Starting from street vendors to luxurious hotels, tissues papers are used as an essential commodity. Its one-time use and recyclable feature make it hygienic to be used in hospitals and salons. With viruses spreading easy, tissues have become an essential for safety and hygienic measures. With varieties like paper towels, napkins, facial tissue, baby wipes and toilet paper, tissue paper has a wider, substantial market. Finally, with ease in dying and printing a wide variety is presented to the market with tissues in varied colors and prints.
The government’s ban on plastic and to be eco-friendly every retail store in the country is using paper bags. From small business shops to big brand retail showrooms and malls, paper bags have replaced the plastic bag market. With quality and dyes, the paper bags are being made sturdier and their appearance has been enhanced. With its simplicity in making, paper bags are manufactured from household industries to medium and large-scale industries. The exponential growth has shown a sustainable market for the paper bags manufacturing industry.
New discoveries are made every day about the harmfulness of plastic to humans and the environment, most of the countries have reduced their use of plastic to minimal. India is on its way to being eco-friendlier by banning the use of plastic. This has given way for various industries to use paper packing over plastic packing. Most of the restaurant chains, bakeries and confectionaries, food delivery chains, fast food chains and pharmaceuticals have adapted paper packing. With its recyclable and non-toxic nature, food industry has adapted to paper packing widely. Soon, food commodities and retail goods are going to completely transform to paper packing leaving the industry with an ever-growing demand.
